Harmo Kallaste
Sound Designer | Mixer | Composer | Tutor
Who I am?
Defining myself has always been a challenge — I’ve always worn many hats. Am I a sound designer, musician, producer, teacher, keyboard player … or just someone who’s always been fascinated by sound in all its forms? I’m not sure. Maybe this website will help you figure it out.
Skills & Experience
My journey in sound postproduction began in 1997 with the film Georgica, directed by Sulev Keedus. Since then, I’ve worked as a sound designer, sound editor, or re-recording mixer on numerous award-winning local and international productions.
From mono and up to full length feature film in 7.1 or Dolby Atmos – it’s all doable.
While my main focus over the past decade has been TV and film postproduction, I occasionally dive into music mixing and recording when the right project comes along.
Music
My musical journey began in 1987 with the band Krimbel, followed by Linnu Tee in 1989. Throughout the ’90s and 2000s, I toured with several well-known Estonian acts such as House of Games, Blacky, Koit Toome, Compromise Blue, and Terminaator. I’ve contributed to numerous live and studio projects as a keyboard player and multi-instrumentalist, and I’ve also worked behind the scenes as an engineer, producer, and mixer on several local chart hits. One of my most recognized songwriting credits is Keelatud maa (“Forbidden Land”), performed by Maarja, which secured 8th place for Estonia at the Eurovision Song Contest in Dublin in 1997. There’s a lot to look back on — and hopefully still more to come. I’ve composed music for commercials, television, and film.
Whether it’s a mono voiceover or a symphony orchestra in Dolby Atmos – it’s all doable.
I hold both a BA (Hons) and MA (Hons) in Composition and Music Technology / Recording Arts from the Estonian Academy of Music and Theatre.
Since 2017, I’ve been working as a lecturer in sound at the Baltic Film, Media and Arts School, part of Tallinn University.
I try to bring both practical experience and creative thinking into the classroom — aiming to share not just techniques, but also the joy of making sound come alive.
What People Say
-
Working with Harmo for long years has been a pure pleasure. He has everything an excellent sound designer should have – sensitivity, technical skills, openess to work with different – sometimes difficult – directors and in different situations. I would start the next project with him right away and am recommending to do so to everyone!
Ivo Felt – Producer | Sound Designer -
The rich blend of experience, a refined pair of ears and a sophisticated sense of storytelling is what makes Harmo an inspiring mentor. I’m deeply grateful for his sharp, honest and encouraging advice, his words had become a milestone in my development as a Sound Designer.
Israel Bañuelos – Student | Sound Designer -
I worked with Harmo on a feature documentary and found him not only to be a skilled, reliable and very engaged sound designer but also a creative artist that I could learn from and develop my own skills. Harmo is the kind of co-worker that you don’t have to inspire and encourage, when he takes one a project he inspires and encourages you. And you’ll do better, you make better art.
Johan Karrento – Director -
Being mentored by Harmo during one and a half year as part of my masters in film with specialization in sound design, was one of the most enriching experience professionally and personally during this program. Harmo’s commitment and dedication makes the process of learning and improving faster and focused, this helping to develop a personal style. Years of experience and the will of sharing make of Harmo an amazing teacher, committed professional and a great human being.
